Unusual ginigival pigmentation characteristics have historically occured more frequently in some cultures, as compared to others. With the effects of globalization and cross-cultural population growth, these culture-specific pigmentation issues are becoming more and more commonplace.

The chief complaint centers on having brown or dark brown splotchy gum tissue. For some the effects are more pronounced, resulting in a solid shade of brown throughout all tissues. The Causes of Dark Gum Tissue

In general terms, melanin, carotene and hemoglobin are the common pigments that contribute to the normal color of gum tissue. Certain imbalances of these pigmentation components cause the distortions in cosmetic appearance. In some cases the condition is known as black gums.
